Brighton Pier to Pier
Sep 1, 2010, 1:05 pm

Brighton PierWell done to Penguin water polo ladies Rebecca Herbert, Tasja Botha and Lorelle Dooley who took part in the annual Brighton Pier to Pier swim on Saturday 24 July 2010. About 150 swimmers from clubs across England took part in the 1,500m race which dates back to 1936, between Brighton's West Pier and Palace Pier.

Rebecca was the first Penguin home in a time of 25.28 minutes. This gave her 17th place overall and 9th place in her category (senior women). Tasja and Lorelle came in more-or-less together in 27.58 and 27.59 minutes respectively. They finished 23rd and 24th overall and 12th and 13th out of the senior women.

At the last weekend of the British League our women's third team, playing in Division 4 as Penguin Rockhoppers, took the runner's up spot to qualify for the play-offs next Sunday against Invicta. A win would see us promoted to the Third Division.
By contrast, our second team, playing as Penguin Kings, emerged from the weekend facing a play-off against Carlisle to retain their place in the Second Division. This match will also be played next week in Walsall.

Ian Williams

Ian Williams with then President Steve Baker in 2005We are also sad to report that Ian Williams passed away on Wednesday 12 August 2010 following a protracted period of ill health.

This picture shows Ian (on the left) at the Penguin Dinner Dance in 2005 with then Club President Steve Baker.

Ian was a long-standing member of Penguin, serving on the Committee as Club Secretary and Registrations Secretary for many years, as well as running the Masters Swimming section. In recognition of his services to the Club he was made a Life Member a number of years back.

Our thoughts are with Ian's family.

Ian's funeral took place on Friday 20 August at Mortlake Crematorium. Steve Baker paid tribute to Ian's role within the Club. Read the tribute here (pdf).

Penguin Rockhoppers secure 2nd place and go for gold!

On Saturday the Rockhoppers continued their winning streak in the British League Fourth Division as they took on Manchester Dolphins and Southampton Sirens for the third time this season.

First up were Manchester Dolphins.  Leah Hagen was quick to score a few goals getting us off to a good start.  We kept the lead throughout the first and second quarter but in the third the Mancunian youngsters fought back harder with some well place shots, reflecting the fight and determination they have shown throughout the season.  We replied by lifting our game and increasing our lead to win the match 14-11.  Welcome to Lauren Harris who made her Penguin debut.
Second up were Southampton, an experienced team of strong swimmers that we had not beaten yet this season.  The match was closely fought, and no goals were given easily by either side.  Penguin triumphed 11-9.
These wins secure Penguin Rockhoppers 2nd place in the division and the weekend's results leave gold open for the taking at our next and final weekend in Manchester in January.

Penguin U16s results from the London League
Oct 15, 2010, 1:26 pm

london water polo league logoOur Under 16 water polo team met Basildon and Watford in the London League last weekend.

We started well against a mostly younger Basildon side, going ahead by 3 or 4 goals in the first quarter. Having taken the early advantage Penguin coaches restructured the team to give less experienced players more of a game. We conceded a few softer goals after that, but were never in any danger of losing. Final score 8-5.

We had a tougher time against an impressive Watford squad that included three GB players. Penguin played very competitively in the first quarter which we drew 3-3. However the Watford side had greater depth and swimming mobility - plus the scoring might of one of their GB players - and we lost the match 10-4.

Our next games are against Ealing and Basingstoke on the 21st November at Gurnell where we’ll be competing for a place in the top group play-offs.

Penguin ladies second team win one and lose one

On Saturday 15 January Penguin Kings played in Grantham.  This was a day of games resceduled from December when snow interrupted the British League schedule.
Our first game against Hucknall was a great match.  Cohesive team play saw us convert potential into reality and we won the match 12-7!
Our second game was against our southern rivals the Mid Sussex Marlins. Whilst we put up a strong performance and had opportunities to take the lead (not least during the man-up period following a brutality exclusion against MSM) we narrowly lost 5-7.
These results mean our future in the Second Division hinges on our final British League matches in Manchester next weekend.  Go Penguin!
