Penguin Vicky Miller swims for the victorious Middlesex team
Nov 16, 2009, 3:44 pm

Penguin Vicky Miller, a third team water polo player, swam for Middlesex at the Southern Counties Swimming competition yesterday. Vicky was selected for the Middlesex team on the back of her strong performance at the Barnet Copthall Masters meet in September.

Eight counties were competing in the competition which was hosted by Middlesex in Southbury. Sussex and Middlesex were neck and neck throughout and Vicky was part of the winning 72+ yrs Medley relay team and the 100+ yrs Freestyle relay team in races which showed the depth of the Middlesex squad. Vicky also competed in the individual 18+ yrs 50m Backstroke, coming 3rd with a credible time of 34.6 secs, and more importantly beating her Sussex rival.

Going into the final mixed relays, Middlesex were one point ahead of Sussex, and supporters cheered the teams on with baited breath. Sussex performed well in the older age groups but Middlesex pulled back in the final few races to take the overall title.

A well-deserved reward for the effort of the whole team, but well done to Vicky in particular.

With some new faces and a whole load of enthusiasm Penguin Rockhoppers headed to Newport on 16 and 17 October for their second British League weekend, with the prospect of facing the current league leaders Sunderland, and local rivals Polytechnic.

After a slow start against Sunderland, Penguin managed to claw their way back into the game with a huge team effort and strong performances from 3rd team newbies Leah Hagen, Laura Hues and Magda Gawlik. After a thrilling finish with Penguin scoring 4 goals in the last quarter we managed an impressive 8-8 draw.

In the second match against Poly, Penguin were dominant from the start and never looked like losing.  With five of the team getting on the score sheet all 12 girls that played made a huge contribution to the 6-4 victory.
