Medal commemorating the opening of Lime Grove Public BathsThank you to John Francis for sharing with us photos of a medal that belonged to his grandfather and Penguin member, E.W. Francis. The medal commemorates the opening in 1907 of the Lime Grove Public Baths which soon afterwards became our Club's home for many years.

John's father, Jack E.E. Francis, was also a member of Penguin in the 1920s or 30s.

Vicky Miller's English Channel Relay Success
Jul 23, 2013, 1:22 pm

Vicky Miller swimming the English Channel as part of team MamboWell done to Penguin Vicky Miller who, with three other swimmers in Team Mambo, swam the English Channel as a relay on Tuesday 16 July.

The original team comprised all Penguin water polo girls and was set to go in September 2012 but their attempt was delayed due to poor conditions. Then Bronwyn Donne got married and Julia Hornig moved to Texas so a new team was assembled for 2013.

The foursome successfully completed the swim in 10 hours 40 minutes, significantly faster than they had expected thanks to perfect weather and sea conditions beyond anything they could have hoped for. Although starting in the dark and swimming through seaweed and thousands of jellyfish presented their own challenges!

Vicky has been fundraising for the World Food Programme, a charity ran by the UN that helps the millions of people hungry around the world. She is hugely grateful for everyone's generous donations which has taken the total to Crossing routeover £2500. www.justgiving.com/VickyChannelSwim

First place for Hannah
Jul 12, 2013, 6:06 pm

Swimming in her first ever open water event, Hannah Monaghan certainly made her mark and put Penguin's name at the top of the results sheet by finishing first overall in the Capital Tri 1.5k race at West Reservoir last Sunday.

And since her newly ordered wetsuit did not arrive in time, Hannah swam without the added speed afforded to her neoprene-clad competitors. Great result Hannah!

The event was Race 1 of Captial Tri's Sport Pursuit Splash Race series.

Penguin goalkeepers meet for the first time...
Jun 28, 2013, 2:41 pm

Charlie Mock meets Bryan RandallTwo Penguin goalkeepers - Charlie Mock and Bryan Randall  - recently met for the first time in Malta.

Bryan and his wife Sheila travelled with other Penguin 'oldies' on their annual visit to Malta. During the trip Bryan met Charlie, a Malta resident and local water polo legend, who played as a goalkeeper for Penguin during a water polo tour on the island some years back.

In the intervening years Charlie has become a great friend to our Club and always has a warm welcome for any Penguins visiting the island. He is also an honorary member of the Club and was a guest of honour at this year's dinner and dance.

Bryan played for Penguin for many years but emigrated to Australia in 1967, although he remains in touch with many of his former team-mates.

Windsor Swim and OPen Water Race@ West Reservoir
Jun 2, 2013, 6:22 pm

It was a good day today - the sun was shining at last and Penguin Masters swimmers had some great results in two open water races.

Montse Verdugo and Lisa Williams did the 3k Windsor Swim finishing 4th and 5th in their respective categories. They were among the few brave (or should that be mad?) souls who didn't wear wetsuits, using the race as training for their Channel-relay in August.

Across town Fran Lou, Richard Royal, Agnes Zsofia Nagy and Charles Wahab competed in the inaugural Tri-Roots race at West Reservoir near Manor House. All four swam the 750m distance and finished 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th overall.
