Our first game of the women’s National League season was a good old London derby against Otter A. We made history in this game since, despite numerous shots at goal and their goalie saving all but six, we didn’t get a single major foul. This is a first and a nice little stat for the history books! (Penguin won 6-2)
Our second opponents were Liverpool A. They provided a good taster of the high-level water polo we’ll be facing when we head to the Europeans in December. Again great discipline all round with only five kick outs – pretty impressive against such a tough team. However the scoreline reflects that more hard work is needed in the pool over the next few weeks. (Lost 14-3)
Third game on the Sunday was against another top team – Manchester A. Our tactic was to shut down the counters as much as possible. We did this to perfection in the first two quarters but then lack of fitness started to take its toll, although discipline remained strong with only three major fouls across the match. (Lost 9–2)
The next National League weekend is in Corby on the 17/18th October where we will meet Sheffield, ranked third in the National League. No pressure then!
