Penguin Ladies took on the best of the UK water polo teams the British Championships at Manchester at the weekend.
Our first game was the semi final against favourites City of Manchester. They took an early 5-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. We got on the scoreboard with two goals before the half time whistle but our two goals were matched by another two from Manchester as they went 7-2 up.
There was little we could do as the home team began to run away with the match, winning it 11-6. This put us in the third/fourth play-off next day against London rivals Otter.
The London derby needed extra time to find a winner. After a 5-5 draw in normal time, we lined up to contest two further periods of three minutes each. Near misses and close saves kept the first period goalless, but Penguin’s Lorelle Dooley fired the deciding shot that won us the match, 6-5.
