Following an early start and an adventurous journey up to Walsall on Sunday, Penguin ladies faced the rough and tough Liverpool Lizards in their first game of the tournament, ending in a 5-3 loss.
Our second game was against Tyldesley where we fared somewhat better. Despite three majors from Leah Hagen and a straight wrapping from the Green Machine (non-violence related), the Penguins held onto a lead from their strong first half to win 4-3.
We really came into own in the third match against Caledonia, working well as a team to create eight beautiful goals and take the win 8-4. Special mention to Chiara Palazzo and Julia Petchey who put our 2-pit tactics into practise to great effect.
In our next game we took on the scousers’ other team (the Water Beatles) and this was another close one. Thanks to a cracking 5m shot from Nora Benko and some astounding saves by goalkeeper Meli Menczinger we came back from 2-1 down to hold the Water Beatles to a 2-2 draw.
To round off the day, the Penguins put in a strong team effort with goals from Leah Hagen, Laura Hues, Marta Tufet, super-coach Nora Benko and two backhanders from Chiara Palazzo leading to a resounding 8-3 win against Manchester Comets.
